“We actually picked up a tenth on the stopwatch in that race so the changes helped,” Zach recalled. “But then we got loose going into turn one with about five to go. We had no yellow flags to bunch the field up so we did the best we could and got fourth. All in all it was a fun day and I want to thank my team and everyone who supports our racing. I can’t wait for the next one!”
Cartersville, Ga.- Zach Leonhardi has been waiting for a few weeks now to strap into the team’s newly acquired INEX Legends car at Atlanta Motor Speedway. His wait paid off with a strong second place finish in the “Thursday Thunder” opening race and the confidence that this car can be a winner on the 1/4-mile oval track.
“We got faster all throughout the day,” the 12-year-old rising star said. “This new car is definitely much more stable than our other one. It will take some time for us to get it set up perfectly for me but we made a lot of progress in just this first day.”After finishing third in his heat race and being awarded second following a post-race penalty imposed on a competitor, Zach started the feature race on the pole.
He led the first few laps before being passed by arch nemesis Woodrow Mullis. Zach was running the fastest he had all day but was just a tick off the more experienced Mullis’s lap times.”I was having trouble getting my car to turn in the center of the corners toward the end of the race,” Zach explained. “That made my car slower getting through the corners and it basically cost me any shot I might have had at racing Woodrow to the finish, but he was really fast and I’m not sure we could have passed him anyway. Second was great for our first time in this car.”He had one more race left on the day, the King of the Hill event. After making some changes to the car to help it turn better in the center where he needed it to, Zach lined up fifth in this special 7 car event.
