Abington, Mass – Nick Lascoula started eighth in Seekonk (Mass.) Speedway’s 30-lap Late Model feature on Saturday night and fought his way to a fifth place finish. The finish was his second top five in three race events so far in his rookie season in the highly competitive division and it came on a special night for the youngster and his team.
“That was an interesting race,” Nick said. “It was frustrating for the first handful of laps or so because we just kind of stayed in line. But then we got going around lap 7 or 8 and passed three cars in about four laps. Gerry DeGasparre got under me on lap 11, I think and then I just fell in behind him after that.”
Gerry and Nick caught up to Branden Dion and Bobby Pelland, who were racing for third and fourth, and Nick felt like opportunity was knocking.
“Then the yellow came out,” he explained. “It stopped my progress right in its tracks for a few laps.”
Eventually he found himself battling with Dion and ran outside his fellow young racer, the pair fighting for fifth position. “With about 8 laps left I started edging him off the corner,” Nick smiled. “He was better going in but I would get an advantage coming off. I finally got by him and the car was just too loose by then to fight any further. We finished fifth and now we’ve finished fourth, fifth and sixth in three shows. I’m thankful for three straight clean races to start the season, and today was a very special day for us to run well.”
What made the day special for Nick was having family and friends of fallen family friend Colin Maroney on hand at the track to watch him run.
“Colin was just 13 when he died and I’ve been proud to carry a ‘Maroney Strong’ decal on our car this year in his honor. His mom has started a foundation in his memory and they have a Facebook page with that same title as well. I’m happy we ran well tonight and gave them all something to smile about.”
Nick will be back in action this coming Saturday with the Late Model at Seekonk. The following weekend he makes his 2014 INEX Legends Car debut when Seekonk revs up their “Fast Friday” programs for the season.
