There was probably nobody in the Seekonk Speedway pit area smiling any more proudly late on Sunday afternoon than 16-year-old Nick Lascoula. The Late Model division rookie started fourth and raced hard on the outside of the track all afternoon long with some of the best in his class before winding up with a fine fourth place finish for his determined efforts.
Needless to say, Nick was very satisfied with his opening day result.
“This whole Late Model deal is still a little overwhelming for me to be honest,” he smiled. “It’s still just hard for me to believe I’m actually racing in the big cars, let alone to be so competitive. We had such a strong weekend. We were second fastest in Saturday’s practices and we drove from seventh to third in our heat race. My goal for the feature was just to finish the best I can in one piece so we can work on improving next time.”
He achieved his goal and more. Of the feature itself, Nick explained, “The first five laps or so the front two rows ran side by side. I started fourth so I had to drive hard on the top or risk falling way back. I had just started to lose some ground when a yellow came out and then I was right back up top again for a while, racing with Dylan Estrella for fifth. I saw that third and fourth place were banging pretty hard and eventually one of them spun. I battled Dylan again after that restart for several laps and finally cleared him and finished fourth. He ran me clean and I had a blast racing with him. I cannot thank my family and my sponsors enough for all they do for me. This was an awesome weekend. I’m very happy right now!”
